One summer when my brother David and I were little, we visited the Petrified Forest in Arizona.  I remember being a little disappointed that the ancient trees had all fallen down and the forest seemed more like a desert!  But the earth was still a magical and mysterious place, and I was sure that if we dug a hole big enough and deep enough in our own back yard, we could find some buried treasure, or petrified wood.  Or maybe we could dig a hole straight to China!
